I have aquired 2 Full AV/Computer racks with 18 Sony SL-HF750 decks. The machines were used for TV production, and are conected via ribbon cable. I beleive the decks were computer controlled, but I am totally unfamiliar with these systems. If any one is interested in purchasing, or can provide information, please contact me at bradal@guess.com or stang@thirdwave.net. The units are in Southern California, and I do not have manuals, or remotes. Thank you.

Hello, all, First I thought somebody should point out that sony's web page no longer has a beta player on it. Does this mean it is not in production? Just thought you guys would like to know. Also I found a store the other day which had many sony L-750, and L-500 tapes for 5 bucks a piece. I was pretty happy as I personally notice a difference between the sony and Radio Shack tapes. The kicker is they also had about five or so Sony Cleaning tapes. Is this something I should invest in more than one in, or are they still pretty easy to find? And for my last question, they have a sony slhf-600 for sale for $98 dollars, is this a good deal, I only paid $35 for the unit I have now, and that was after being freshly service, granted it isn't a superbeta, but it is hi-fi. Thanx for any help all. Perhaps the only Beta Fan in Vermont Jer

This isn't exactly Betamax, but LRC Video ( http://www.lrcvideo.com ) have a few Sony teletex boards to give away. They are OPK-303 and OPK-203's which were intended for installation in the KV2752 etc televisions. If anybody would like one then they are avalaible free of charge if you collect one from the premises. Alternative they could be posted out at cost. For details Call Bob on 0171 323 2102

I grew up using beta - thats all we used. Well, everybody's grown and gone and my parents have vcrs on all tvs. I was rustling through some memories in the attic and stumbled upon the old beta - along with about 100 movies and home videos - we had the camcorder too....From what i can remember, the reason it was put up there in the first place was because after pressing play - it would start and then stop...as though something was not catching - my initial concern is findindg some sort of manual on line and if not in the library - ehat do i look for.

Question: any info about the BMC-550k? I have a chance to purchase one, but know very little about this camcorder. I am interested in using it for shooting (not collecting), and wanted to try Superbeta as it is/should be better than VHS (and it is cheaper than trying to go to DV right now:) I am inetrested in the camera's functions, inputs/outputs, etc. Any ideas or links to sites would be much appreciated!

Hi, I've just bought a Sony SL-C40UB and it worked perfectly for a day or so but now whenever I eject a cassette, the tape snags somewhere inside. Complete novice here but very technically minded, is there anything I can safely do to remedy this, as I am keen to get this otherwise very nice machine up and running?

I would be grateful for anyone to e-mail me directly at the above address. Thanks!

Does anyone have a Betamax player they can loan/hire for a few weeks? Ours is just about to go in for repair (knackered heads, I think) and we are faced with not being able to provide listening facilities for our 300 odd betamax tapes. We only use Betamax for digital audio, not video.(together with a PCM 701 ES).

Any leads/ help/ suggestions extremely gratefully received!

Hi Rob, regarding the problems you are having with your SL-C40, it sounds to me like there might be a problem with the idler. I think your first move is to open up the machine is try and determine exactly where it is snagging. If you want to have a go yourself then try cleaning anything rubber in the machine with alchohol. If things improve then you should think about replacing them.

Brad,

Your Beta's were owned by "Montage Productions" and used computers to log and control the beta's in the racks you have. The ribbon cables were tied into the basic functions of the machine for control and status. The IR sensors were defeated, the tuner sections were modified, and the Control L port was re-routed to do some other items. About a year or maybe two now, I wrote some instructions for another guy in Southern California that had purchased a couple dozen, maybe he had a hundred of the machines with racks, mounting hardware, and some other optional accessories. If I can find the instructions, I can "html-ize" them or what ever. I'm in Colorado, I prefer to talk on the telephone. Send me an e-mail with a phone number in it, the "www.whowhere.com" doesn't show you in the database.

I'm holding a brand new Sony beta tape in my hands. On its plastic wrapping is printed a tape recording time chart. While it tells about BI, II, III speeds for NTSC use, I noticed that PAL/SECAM systems use only one speed, with a length of 3h15, which is about the same as BII. Does this mean you folks out there in England can only record in BII ?? What about Super High-Band ?? Are there any PAL machines capable of recording in that mode ??

Does BIs stands for SuperBeta at BI speed ?? If so, can I play these tapes in my SuperBeta II,III machine capable of playing BI tapes ??

Since most beta VCRs can only handle BII, III writing speeds, should I expect better results on tapes recorder in SP on a VHS machine ? Do I have to own a BI machine to clearly see the superiority of Beta over VHS ?? I'm asking this because I know that there's an appreciable difference in performance results on PAL systems. But I can't find that so big difference on NTSC. Sure it might be somehow a little better, but you must have a terrific vision and tapes recorded from a reliable source to see it. I'm beginning to think that the differences between the two formats is thin enough that people didn't really noticed a difference at all and prefered the longer recording lenght of VHS.

One last question: Some months ago I had my SLHFR70 SuperBeta rejuvenated. New heads, new upper drum, complete recalibration. I must say the guy who fixed it did a really nice job. I'd say he got the machine back to 95% of when it was new.

Now is the "problem": I also use a SL2710 on another TV set at home. When I play back tapes recorded with the HFR70 in SuperBeta on the 2710,which is _not_ SuperBeta, I can't find any of the glitches it is supposed to do. It just plays fine ! In fact, the only time I can see noise in picture is when I play tapes recorded with the 2710 in standard beta on the HFR70 with the SuperBeta switch on. What do I have to conclude ?? Is the SuperBeta mode of my HFR70 poorly realigned or is my 2710 a stunning performer ??

Thanks for your help and info...

Yes dear NTSC friends us PAL users only have single speed Betamax, roughly equivalent to your BII. The only thing above this standard mode is SuperBeta and SuperBeta Pro which are available on the SLHF-950 and VTC-M40 VCR's.

Hi: Hope that there is help out there. I have a Sony SL-340 unit that has worked well for about 10 years. It recently "ground to a halt".

I brought it to Radio Shack and other repair shops, but no one could help me, not even Sony. My entire collection of 100 vintage movies that I have recorded over the years remain unviewable.

Does anyone know a repair shop in the Long Island or New York City Area that I should contact?

Thank you for your time and assistance. A fellow BETA faithful. Chuck

Bob, this problem with the SL-C6 is that the capstan servo is failing to lock up. This causes the wow on the sound and the moving white band of noise on the picture. You will need to check the capacitors in the servo circuit. Start with the bi-polar electrlytics. If that doesn't cure the problem then check ALL other capacitors. Beware that the servo circuit takes a few seconds to settle after making an adjujstment to the free-speed - so be patient when making trying to set it up. It's best to use an analougue volt meter to look at the feedback signal on the servo loop.

Just thinking when round at my friends audio visual outfit the other day. He told me that broadcast tape is no longer the old 1 inch stuff, they use a format called "Betacam". I have a Sears & Roebuck model 562.53121350 and am trying to find out what company made this for Sears. The tape doesn't want to move or eject. My VCR repair store says I need a reel motor. Are they right? They can't find any info on my machine, since Sears no longer carries it on their parts list. How do I go about translating the Sears & Roebuck number into something I can use to find parts? I discovered this page while seeking info on my Beta VCR, and am quite thrilled to find that there may be some hope out there. Who is the Beta Wizard who can help me out?

I've owned my SANYO VTC-NX100 since new and had no trouble until about 3 years ago when the heads needed replacing. About a month ago similar symptoms as before began to appear on playback, and I baulked at the prospect of forking out another £100. To those of you who haven't visited my website for awhile, you may notice some refinements! I've added a box at the bottom of each page, with links to every page in the entire site - no returning to the HomePage everytime to go somewhere else in the site. I also recently acquired a "Snappy," and the first result is some great additions to "The Dream Machines" picture page! Problem with a SL-HFR70...

The machine works well in BII. But when I record in BIII, then play the recording back, the tape would "slip" in the first few minutes. It would change playing speed for a second or two, therefore playing too fast with noise in the picture and fast sound.

FYI, I tried playing back the same tape in my SL-2710 and the result is perfect. No slips at all...

Anyone can help me out with this ??

The problen with the HFR-70 stems from the fact that the VCR fails to read the control track at the beginning of the tape. The usually stems from wear on the Audio/Control head ( or ACE ). You might like to increase the back tension of the tape to try to improve head to tape contact across the ACE. Alternatively you can try "polishing-up" the head with a metal polish in order to achieve the same thing.

Additionally I have 40 mixed length(L-500/L-750) beta tapes(used) for sale for $40. I am soon to aquire an NTSC betamax(after looking in Australia for about two years), and so consequently if anyone can tell me the addresses of the American beta suppliers for new releases then I would be extremely grateful). I have a conundrum. I attended a wedding in Istanbul, Turkey, last month and have upwards of an hour of good footage recorded with a Sony Mini Digital Video Camera (DCR-PC10). Back home in Cleveland, Ohio, where I live most of the time, I have successfully made copies in NTSC Beta (SL-HF300 and 360) and NTSC VHS and have broken out very useable stills on the computer.

Interrupted my message about my Istanbul wedding videotape problems by hitting the wrong button. To continue :-

Trouble is the bride and bridegroom, who would dearly love to get a copy of the tape, have a Beta machine which I believe is in PAL format. That's correct for Turkey ... right? I'm double checking on that. How do I get from Digital NTSC to PAL Beta? I could go through either NTSC Beta or NTSC VHS but I don't want to lose the inevitable downgrading of quality with yet another copying pass and, in any case, it is hard to find Beta in the US these days, leave alone PAL Beta! Hi there I have a sony sl c5 that suddenly one day developed a poor picture (white horizontal distortion lines) which was worse with a white picture, with the sound remaining OK.

Thanks in advance.

Lee, I think it's more likely the video head is worn out and will need replacing.

Name: charjol
Email:
charjol@hotmail.com
Tuesday 8th September 5:21 pm U.K. Time

Lee, try cleaning video heads. Sometimes with an old or damaged cassette, the magnetic coating detaches from the tape and clogs one of the heads.

If you can't get rid of your problem by cleaning or if it comes back often, then your heads are worn and need replacing.

I've also seen this caused by a worn upper drum, as the tape sticks tighter to it, causing a greater physical contact of the tape with the head. But if your upper drum was worn to this point, you'd experience other tape transport problems.

Regards, Charles

With all the attention to machines, we don't always discuss REMOTE controls, enough. I often find machines, but can't find the original remotes, or it's been lost or destroyed, by the previous owner's kids. I've been luck, by having almost esclusively SONY gear, that they are mostly interchangeable, even to the point of the older ZENITH models, that were build by SONY, so many years ago. I hope to start using SONY's fairly inexpensive, sort of "cone shaped" universal remotes in the future. Has anyone had success with any particular type of UNIVERSAL remote controls that are out there?

Hi everyone... I'm experiencing difficulties with fixing my SLHF1000 and request some support. My unit had a tape chewing problem. I figured the capstan shaft wasn't accurately vertical. So I adjusted its verticality using Sony's parallel plate SL-0657, then changed the pinch roller, as well as a worn upper drum assy.

Now the unit doesn't chew tapes anymore, but I can't get my tapes tracked. I tried adjusting the ACE height and azimuth but I only get hardly fair results (it would track, but without the tracking knob being in the center, and completely goes off track as I try another tape. Betascan and special effects are a disaster.). Since I already spent several hours turning screws with no good result, I figure there is some kind of procedure to achieve this task. I don't have an oscilloscope at home, but I think an alignment tape and a TV set would be enough.

If anyone knows how to do the job, can (s)he please reply back ? Thanks a lot..

Charles

I have fun at my job with all the customers who come in and when we end up talking about video and the topic of Beta comes up how many of them say the same thing...Beta is better than VHS. Many of them had a Betamax and got rid of it when the nation went to VHS. But it is just amazing to me how many of them know the truth...Americans got dupped. But the bottom line is that for those of us who still use Beta its just fun to watch a video taped of cable without the eye strain you get from VHS. I won't even discuss "SLP". Let me close by just saying the standard..."Beta is Better!"

MOLER's CAMERA SHOP (316) 685-1114 , WICHITA, KANSAS. They all have Sony remotes (except the "wired" TOSHIBA unit), maybe not the ones they originally came with, but ones that will work. Sorry, I don't have any SUPERBETA units amoung them I know enough to keep what few I see of them for myself. Toshiba V-m40 w/ owner's manual and wired remote $85.00 SONY SL2000 + ZENITH VRT9850 $95.00 SONY SL-HFR30 (HI-FI READY, NO ADAPTER) $100.00 SONY SL-HF300 (Hi-Fi) $125.00 SONY-HFR90 w/HFP-200 (tape unload, out of door isn't always right, that is, you may have to help it "eject", by centering tape, on some cassettes...) $175.00 $175.00 The camera shop has UPS pickup everyday, so they can ship quicker, than, "yours truly", could anyway. I hope this helps........

I'm looking for PAL CED VideoDiscs, which sometimes turn up with PAL Beta Tapes. These CED VideoDiscs come in a 13 x 14 inch caddy that is blue or white in color. The whole caddy is slid into the player, which automatically extracts the disc. The players came from Hitachi and GEC McMichael. Does anyone have any of these discs for sale or know of any establishment that does?

Nigel... I wonder what odd sort of capacitor isn't available anymore from Sony. Perhaps you meant converter. I've had a similar experience with Sony here in Canada finding replacement part for my SL-2710 power supply. I've waited about 6 months to get told that the part was no longer available.

I think the best solution would be to find another C9 just like yours, where everyting could be defective except for the power supply. Then you'd just have to switch power blocks from one machine to the other. Otherwise, if you have some electronics knowledge, you can build another supply. That's what I did. It looks cheesy, because I had to hook up another printed circuit board to the deck, but I sure works :-)

While we're talking technical matters... No mean to be rude, but I wonder where are the real beta experts. I mean, all I find here is very basic troubleshooting information. On every technical question I've asked here in the past, I've never had an answer.

As time grows, all our cherished beta decks starts showing signs of aging. I think it would be important to help each other get the most out of what we've got. I don't want to end up buying a SL-HF2000, if it is (unlikely) still available.

Hi all. I need a little help. I need a remote for my recently purchased Sony SL-HF860D. The Original Sony remote number is: RMT160. Or if anyone has a Radio Shack 5in1 remote from about 1993 (or the 6in1 from the same era) those are good for just about anything Beta. The Model number for the Radio Shack 5in1 is:15-1908. I'm rather disappointed with the newer remotes on the market, mostly all they do is the basic vcr functions or might turn on the PIP but not off or no swap. Anyway if somebdy can help I would be happier tha Heck. Now for the next problem: I don't get "over the air" stations after Ch. 13, which means UHF. I had noticed this same problem with my SLHF900 when I was checking it out. Thought the HF900 problem was because the unit sat in storage for a long time but, now that I have the same problem with my 860D it makes me wonder what the Heck is going on with these Sony VCRs. Or, am I just unlucky lately? I don't hurt too bad because I have a Big dish for everything but Packer and Viking games. Well that's it for now. Good Day. Pepse.

Charles, in response to the question regarding tracking. I'm afraid you are going to have to realign the tape path. After changing a worn upper drum the tape path is almost always affected causing 'hard' tracking problems (cannot be corrected using the tracking control). You are definately going to need to use an oscilloscope to do this. A TV and test tape is definately not sufficient. You will also need a well recorded tape, prefereably pre-recorded but definately NOT one from just before you changed the upper drum. You will then need to observe the output from one of the test pins on the pre-amp board adjusting the wave output by adjusting the tape path guides until a flat response is obtained. Ideally you should obtain a proper Sony alignment tape (http://www.palsite.com/gtapes3.html)

The output should look something like a long rectangle although it is quite difficult to obtain a perfectly flat response. It is best to rely 90% on the results form the oscilloscope as a seemingly good picture can hide some serious tracking errors.

If you have changed a worn upper drum then you should also change the heads as these wear at the same rate. Replacing just the upper drum will cause a big drop in picture quality as the heads no longer protrude past the new upper drum.

(If you are not sure how to do this don't attempt it)

Martin

ps whilst carrying out this procedure, the 'test tape' will almost certainly get damaged. Never rewind over any damaged parts as it will clog or damage the heads.

Nigel, regarding your DC-DC problem. The capacitor you refer to will only fix the new version of DC-DC convertor (polished case). This was never fitted to any of the original units but was available from Sony for a short time. Both the original part AND this new version are now discontinued.

Take a look at http://www.palsite.com/pcat_dcdc.html This page shows the old style convertor.

If you do have the new version, then open up the unit (which is not too easy) and replace the capacitor with a similiarly rated one. You do not need a 'Sony original' here :)

I've died and gone to heaven. I just acquired an almost-new SLHF 1000. It seems to be working OK but it didn't come with an instruction manual. Have you seen the remote for one of these things? More buttons than all my other remotes combined!

Do you know anyone who has one of these models that I could contact about getting a copy of the instruction manual? I would gladly pay for any photocopying costs.

Thanks.

Bruce, I can get you a brand new SL-HF1000 instruction booklet, or if it's no longer available, I can get the service manual, which contains the operating instructions. Get in touch with me by email, and I'll be glad to help you.

Martin, If my heads were worn, then I'd need to change the upper drum as well. But if the heads are ok and the drum is worn, which is my case (heads have been replaced three years ago), then there's not really a need to change the heads as well. Of course there'll be a slight drop in picture quality but is it worth $350 ?? I think not...

Charles, Yes of course you are right in your case it sounds like it would not have been worth it. Not all machines heads though cost that much and for the cost of a cheap 'copy' head, it is usually well worth it. It also depends on how worn the drum was. I have had a lot of experience where the change resulted in a significant drop in quality and the customer would not have excepted the repair.

Hello, I have an interesting problem with my SL-2401. When I playback a tape, the picture will start jumping around, and the sound gets fuzzy and it also slows down. This also seems to be affecting the tuner because when I put a regular channel on, the sound makes cuts in and out rapidly and the color is all messed up. Does anyone know what can be affecting this? I'm stumped.

Martin: I did as you told me... I borrowed a scope, an alignment tape and a service manual for my 1000, and checked out the tape path... Surprisingly, waveforms were almost bullseye with those in the manual, as for the entrance side (before the drum), as I was almost sure it was.

As I was sure, the problem relied on the ACE assembly. I managed to get some great results, still the tracking doesn't center for all speeds. It's a big time hell to adjust !! So I'll endure it this way for now, and someday get it accurately adjust by someone who has more experience than I do..

Rick: As for many aging Betamaxes, your upper drum might have got worn. Therefore the tape sticks to it, causing too much tape tension, making it jitter over the ACE and making it impossible to adjust. Upper drums are still available from Sony, head discs are seldom. You can install cloned heads with good results. I personally had ASTI heads installed in my SL-HFR70 with excellent results. You can also polish the drum with fine steel wool to get it gliding again.. Perhaps you can also turn all guides 180 degrees so the tape will travel on their unused side. After that, you should be able to adjust the ACE much more easily...

Sean: Check for a defective capacitor in your unit's power block. It looks like your capstan motor doesn't turn at the right speed...

She has 25 L750 tapes, from various but all "name" manufacturers (Sony, BASF, Scotch, TDK, etc.) A couple of the tapes were used a lot, but the vast majority should be in near-new condition: recorded, watched once, and then set aside. My friend Martin ! Let me share a fine experience with you. You know about my SL-HF1000's tracking problems. Well, having tilted the head to the maximum and almost stripped all adjustments screws, I knew I had to have the ACE replaced. If the upper drum was to be worn enough to be replaced, I figured so was the ACE.

So, I faxed Sony with a request for a quotation for a new ACE. They sent me back bad news: The new ACE costs $170, and would be back-order for a couple of months here in Quebec. As I found this price ridiculous, I was about to give up on the machine.

Then, two days ago, a women came to my workplace (I work in a service center), with a SL-2300. She hadn't operated the unit for perhaps ten years because of the VHS predominance, and asked $10 for the unit. I obviously procured the deck, and I discovered, to my great pleasure, that it uses the same exact ACE head !! but with very low wear. I just replaced mine with this one and adjusting it was a breeze.

So now I own a treasured SL-HF1000 in perfect working order and saved $160. There's a permanent smile in my face !!

I tried to make a copy of music videos that were in VHS onto my Beta. However, when I played the Beta copy, the pictures were scrambling. What could be wrong? There's nothing wrong with my Beta, it's a brand new tape, and the VHS tape doesn't show the pictures scrambling.

Anothing thing I want to bring up, even though this doesn't relate to Beta. Does anybody know or have any RockAmerica videotapes? If so, PLEASE e-mail me.

My god I did not realise that there were so many of us left!

I am looking for a (cheap) hi-fi stereo beta machine.

Can any one help me?

My current stock of working betamax videos include a Sony C6(bought for £1 in a car boot sale) and a Sanyo 9300 (works occasionally).

In reference to Sven's problem of copying vhs to Beta if the music videos are from around 1988, when the movie people were into the second phase of macrovision, there were some movies that wouldn't copy to Beta worth crap. Good Morning Vietnam is a prime example from my experience. As I had read back then the Macro was so good that if you played some movies on a very good high end vhs player the macrovision was very noticable. This being the movie or whatever you bought at the store. I just recently copied Star Trek 8 First Contact, from an old Fisher 2 head Hi-Fi (Circa 1988) to my Sony SLHF860D (Circa 1988) and I experienced no problems what-so-ever I recorded in B II. On a similar note does anybody know if the old Miami Vice tv series is available on tape? If not I am looking for a particular episode from season 2 entitled: Out where the busses don't go. I wore out my only copy a few years ago and sure do miss that episode in particular. If somebody has a copy I'll pay for the tape and shipping/handling. Beta or vhs. Later.

Well I am still waiting for any information on TT-F1 portable tuner power supplies, does anyone even own one?. Another question for anyone able to help. One of our C7's developed a fault during a lesson on thursday. When you start to play any tape the picture wobbles for about 40 seconds and then settles down. I have cleaned the heads but that has not helped. If anyone needs a copy of the Sony CV2100 Reel to Reel video recorder service manual or operation manual (Not that it's difficult) then I could provide Photocopies. I know it's not a betamax machine but at least it's not VHS. The quality is amazing for a 25 year old machine. Does anyone use U-Matic? We have one as well. It's dam heavy.

Thanks Rob

Greetings to one and all. I have just two technical questions to ask regarding things of a slightly 'Beta' nature. Please don't be alarmed if you've seen these questions posed on WWW before as I've been 'off-line' for a while and as a result, missed many responses given on the subjects. Sorry about that, Chief!

Sony SLO1700 Industrial duplicator.

A superb machine in every respect, except that is, one.... There appears to be very common fault among this breed, and it might possibly affect other models that have the same sophisticated tape transport (mechanism). After years of valiant service, most of the SLO1700's that I've known seem to suffer from a peculiar ailment, their tape transports no longer wish to function.

Symptom: When a tape is loaded and successfully wound around the tape transport (suggesting that the loading motor still operates), there is no tape movement when one tries to 'FFwd', 'Rew', 'Play' or 'record'!! When any of these functions are tried, one can hear various noises from the tape transport's mechanics such as the video heads rotating, but no tape movement at all. "The eyes move, the ears twitch, but mister brain appears to have long since departed" (A slightly modified quote from Lord Blackadder II -me thinks?) I do not wish to align the above quote (describing Lord Percy's 'intellectual' disposition, or lack of it) to that of my SLO1700, however, that does seem to perfectly describe the machine's current disposition rather well... I have three of these beautiful machines and would to prevent this happening to the remaining two. Any ideas anyone????

Sony PCM-501ES Digital processor.

By utilising the SLO1700 deck with this unit, one would assume that all should work well. A Sony product connected to another Sony product (A 'PCM' unit connected to a 'BETA' unit), however, all is not as it should be...

Symptom: After about half an hours use, the PCM-501ES suddenly goes into a 'Play Back Mute' mode!! That is to say it works fine up until it switches itself to 'Play Back Mute'. When you switch the unit (the PCM) off and leave it off for a few minutes, then switch it back on again, the unit runs fine again... well, for a few minutes at least before that old familiar 'Play Back Mute' does its thing. I posed this very question on the 'DAT HEADS LIST' a while back and got a very unfavourable (almost spiteful) response . Can anyone here shed any light as to what's happening?? If it's a temperature related fault, then what component might be responsible? I have too many 'F1' formatted Beta tapes to loose if a solution can't be found.

N.B. On the subject of the F1, does any one out there have a PCM-F1 (in good condition (working)) complete with adapter and batts. for sale???

No, it couldn't be Microvision. This tape was made in 1984. The pictures doesn't always scramble, only certain parts do the picture get messed up or "jumps". The odd thing about it is that if I record vhs to vhs, there's really no problems. I guess because the tape is too old and too worn out.

I have found yet another machine at work in need of a little TLC, a SLC6. The picture flickers every so often but is otherwise clear apart from an ocaisonal blur straight across? Any body got any ideas, if it's the heads / motor is a C7 or C5 assembly the same? I could just do with this macine working as I have so many VHS players stacked up on top of each other it's a bit of a pain having a top loader any way I am down to two working C7's from 5 in one week! The darn history department keeps watching beta tapes.

By the way on a less interesting subject, does anyone know if heads for GEC vhs videos are available.

Thanks all.

Rob,

the problem with the SL-C6 is that the capstan servo is not locking up. This is a very common thing and is almost certainly due to dried up caps in the servo circuitary. If you take the bottom cover off you should see some pots labelled CAP FREE, DFS etc. I suggest you start by replacing the caps in this area. Begin with the bi-polar ones, then move onto the electrolytics. Last time I worked on a C6 the fault was traced to a 0.47uF cao next to the servo chip.

Johannes,

Re 501 question,

I think you need to identify if the 501 is at fault. Can you connect it to another VCR? These PCM decoders tend to suffer from PSU problems these days. The sysmptoms often occur more when the unit gets hot. Could you try covering/uncovering the 501 and see if the time before failure changes? If it does I suggest you look for large electrolytic caps in the power supple. AFAIR there are a few 78/79 series regulators which suffer as well.

Hi there! I'm a Beta-collector from Norway, and first of all i would like to say that this is a great web site !! I just discovered it today, and I've been browsing around now for almost 4 hrs. I've been collecting Betamax-machines for almost 10 years, and although I rarely use them, they are among my most treasured possessions. I have around 25 different machines (all Sony's, although I do have a Sanyo VTC-9000 -it was the first VCR my family ever owned), all in mint condition, and i even have the BetaStack units for both the C7 and the C9. They're really fun to watch while they're operating. I also have a SuperBeta machine which was bought i Malaysia around 1989 - SL-8800P (It's a playback-only machine.). Are there any other Beta-collectors in Norway, I wonder -please let me know. Be seeing you !!

My SL-HF900 is having recording problems on BETA II and III speeds giving me the "snowstorm" effect over the image in normal playback. When I punch it to playback at "2X" the image clean up perfectly. What am I seeing here? Is something in my "slow speeds" controls going?

Here's a cue for you Al. Open up your deck and play a tape at normal playback speed. Then gently push the back tension arm to add some more tension to the tape, and see if you can get a clear image. If so then suspect a worn ACE head.

It feels good to find a site like this!

Two things:

You can convert the SLHF900 to record Beta I speed using the service of a fellow in Modesto, CA. He is highly regarded because of the quality and prices of his repair services in Beta machines, according to what I have read in other Beta sites. Right now, he has one of my VCR's being repaired. Here's his e-mail address: andysbeta@yahoo.com

Also, if you are interested in Beta VCR's (he has several models for sale), check this page: http://www.equipmentcenterwest.com/nu.htm

Call Roman, he has a 800 number at the end of the page, he has more Beta stuff than the ones in that page.

Hope my info is useful to some of you guys.

Thanks for the info Alan, I will give it a try in the next few weeks (If i get a chance). I was looking through the Machine guide and spotted the Sanyo VTC-M20. We have one in the geography department, I have not used it yet and did not realise it was so rare. Anyway i was given some probes for my ocsiloscope and my boss said I could have some money to buy some technical books, I don't know a great deal about Video repair but I am desperate to learn the tricks of the trade. Does anyone know of a realy good book that covers Video and TV repair?. Especialy one with some references to beta machines. If I don't get proficient soon then I will have the dreadful task of transfering the hundreds of Beta tapes onto VHS(AAARRRGGGGG).

See you later.

Alan, thank you for your response. I've taken your advise and lifted the lid on things. The same fault still occurs irrespective of VCR, I've even tried my Mitsubishi HS-E82 and Panasonic's NV-E180 Portable and the PCM-501ES still goes into 'Play Back Mute' mode.... However, take the PCM's cover off and it will operate fine, for a whole day, in fact! This tends to confirm that the fault is indeed temperature related. I'll be investigating those offending electrolytic caps and regulator as soon as I acquire a service manual from Sony.

Re: SLO-1700 question

Johannes, I do remember one small trick on these style of mechanisms (e.g. the SLC9). Do the reels appear to 'twitch' at all just after loading the tape? If so I may know a solution.

Martin

Martin, yes the reels do indeed 'twitch' just after you've loaded in a tape. The strange thing is that just prior to the mechanism's complete failure, all audio input to the deck died too... (and just in case anyone was wondering, I wasn't listening to a Des O'Conner record at the time! Even Sony equipment has certain standards too, and although SLO-1700's are built like a brick-shit -house, they too can only take just so much audio [and visual] abuse!) So it wasn't 'bad taste' that killed my deck! But seriously... Martin, do tell me more about this trick and solution of yours.

Be seeing you!

Name: Martin Evans
Email:
martin@browns.co.uk
Monday 19th October 9:05 am U.K. Time

Johannes, the reason for the 'twitching' on my machine was because the rubber 'breaks' underneath the unit had worn. These are two very small 'o' shapped pieces of rubber about the same size as the letter itself. This doesn't have to be the problem on your machine. The reason for the twitching is that when the unit starts up, it tries to determine if a tape is loaded. It does this by making the tape go taught so that it touches the tape sensors better. In my case, the breaks were stopping this from happening correctly. Another possibility is that the sensor is not working correctly or the back tension is set incorrectly. The end result in all cases is that one sensor says there is a tape present and another says there isn't, so it shuts down. I hope this helps.

Hi folks.... I'm looking for some technical answers. Please e-mail me directly if you can help me trace down the problem, or if your Sony machine experienced anything similar. I have a EDV-9300 (the Canadian version of the 9500) that, well, freaks out... The local Sony authorized dealer here in Louisville wants $90 just to say "Yup, it's broke." I described the problem, and he said that it could be one of 20 components that have gone bad, and wouldn't even give me a price for the 2 biggies that I suspect (either the computer or power supply), or even if they're available. I'm supposed to give him $90 just to let him tell me the parts aren't available? I don't think so. I even sent the machine to Sony in Chicago, but of course, the problem didn't occur while they had it for a week. It seems the problem occurs only when it's plugged in for several days. Here's the info: Sony EDV-9300 ED-Beta machine (serial number A000204). I believe the problem is in either the power supply or computer. The problem progresses in the following order after the machine has been plugged in for several days. The problems usually dissipate after the unit has been powered up for an hour or more. Also, it seems to work OK for a while after being unplugged for a few days: 1. Display panel lights dim and brighten, while the machine loses synch in recording and playback. Video image on screen flashes on and off while this is happening. 2. Remote sensor becomes inoperative. Unit can still be operated by keys on machine. 3. Keys on machine become inoperative. Unplugging the machine for a minute usually fixed the remote sensor and keys, but this "fix" is becoming less and less reliable, and as of today is almost a non-fix unless I unplug it overnight. 4. Finally, the machine will stop working altogether. The only thing left on the display is the clock (which works), without the blinking colon (:) shown, and the "tuner" icon is lit. Or, the lights will stay on, and the machine will change channels all by itself, like going from 0 to 1 to 125, etc., then eventually completely locking up Any ideas???? Thanks! Jonathan Blaine

I am looking for an NTSC standard Beta hi-fi deck. Working or not. Sony SuperBeta models, the SL-2710, and Aiwa models are preferred. For SuperBeta, I am looking for anything from Sony, Pioneer, NEC, and/or Toshiba. Machine doesn't have to work, but can't have power supply problems. Thank you for reading. - Reinhart

Rinehart.. :-) I guess you own a 2710 with a bad power supply. I own one myself which sustained major voltage peaks.. Everything smoked up. Of course, most parts for 2710 (as a growing number of betamaxes) are no longer available. Do as I did, build up a new power supply.. I have the service manual if you need some specs.

This is a multi-part message. I inherited a Sanyo Model "VCR 4030 Betacord" VCR. The VCR part works. The display has this problem various segments and function indicators strobe through from left to right and it doesn't display what is actually going on with the VCR. Part 1) Does anyone have a service manual for this VCR that would be willing to Fax me the page(s) concerning the display board/tuner select board section and the power supply section? Part 2) Does anyone have replacement parts for these 2 interconnected boards? Part 3) Is anyone interested in buying this unit?

To a good home and someone who is willing to do some repairs. An SL-5800 and (2) AG-300 BetaStack Changers for sale. While checking the 5800 (which had been in storage for years) it suddenly won't play or rewind. I suspect one of the belts broke. The 5800 is in fair cosmetic condition with new heads installed before I put it in storage. I have only one cable and power rewind. It occurred while I was testing the remote (which works, but is in cosmetically poor condition). It happened during slow motion supply and while they both will insert a tape, they have problems with ejecting or changing. One Betastack is used and the other unused (my understanding is that it was a showcase demo unit). I'm hoping someone can get at least one perfectly working changer out of the two. Shipping will be from Honolulu, Hawaii, so factor this in to the price you'd be willing to pay. E-mail me or we can chat on this page.

I also have several new and used Beta tapes.

SL-8000E help. Can anyone suggest why my SL-8000 would have the following problems:

1) Whenever turned on, motor is on continuously, except when cassette cover is in open position.

2) Cannot push rewind lever down - with or without loaded video cassette in place. Seems to be a lever/arm in the way in the internal mechanisms preventing the rewind key being depressed.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Getting ready to move.

So, to a good home, I have the following for sale:

SL-2700 - Beta Hi-Fi with remote and manual. Works and looks great. I stopped using it years ago only because it's not a SuperBeta. Asking $300 plus shipping.

SL-600S - Non Hi-Fi SuperBeta, with manual but without remote. Works, but is very noisy, it's been that way since the day I bought it (over 5-6 years ago) so I don't know it's true condition. I can't find the correct remote for it. But I'll include a RMT-136 remote (a very basic remote). Asking $75 plus shipping.

SL-10, SL-250, SL-300, SL330 - Non Hi-Fi SuperBeta. No remotes. All three have problems with the tape loading transport (I've found this is the most common problem with my Sonys). It seems to be a fairly simple thing to repair and otherwise they work fine. It was mentioned on an earlier post that some parts may be interchangeable with other Sonys. I just had the loading transport repaired on my EDV-7500 and the part box said SL-330, so they do share some parts. Asking $125 plus shipping for all four.

I also have over 100 used Fuji and Sony L-750s (all regular grade) that I'm looking to sell as a lot. These tapes date from 1984 - 1992 and have SuperBowl and Olympics taped on them. All had very low usage (no more than ten passes each, I've be a Beta lover since 1981 and remember the days of $15-$20 L-500s so I used to keep track of all tape usage)and I know the Sonys were only used to tape the Olympics, then placed in storage. All come with their original boxes, but all have homemade labels. Rather than bulk erase them, I'm leaving them as is since someone may find something of interest on them. Make me an offer on a few or the whole lot.

Shipping will be from Honolulu, Hawaii, so factor this in to the asking price. E-mail me or we can chat on this page.

P.S. Just to let everyone know that I haven't given up on Beta, it's just that I'm moving overseas and it will cost too much to repair and/or ship these with me. I still have and love my other Sony Betas and they're coming with me. :)

Regarding betamax cleaning tapes.

Why not clean the heds manualy, it's quite easy on most models and probably a lot more effective. Look on the BETAMAX PAL site for a guide on how to clean your heads.

P.S. I tried a cleaning tape a couple of months ago as a shortcut and ended up with a machine that will not produce a clear stable image.

Having a problem with one of my Sony 900's. When I press the play button the machine's capstan motor freezes and will not turn - I hear a hum. It locks up like a computer and to turn it off I have to unplug it. I know the motor is good because when you turn on the unit, you can see it a quarter revolution or so. Think it has to be some board responsible for the motor. Appreciate any help and/or service manual assistance.

Got two 5000's to get rid of. Each has problemos - on one the picture flashes on playback but if I play tape back on other beta it is ok so it has to a problem in playback circuits. The other machine will only show a picture if I use the scan functiion.

Also have a working 5800 in real good condition - no manuals, Please get back to me via e-mail - I wasa lucky to find this site and consider myself lucky if I can ever find it again!

Hi folks...

I've just put my hand on a pile of Sony service bulletins discussing odd beta problems or problems which cannot get fixed through standard troubleshooting. As for example, if you experience fluttering sound and/or unstable picture and unsuccessfully changed the pinch roller, you should switch reel tables positions (i.e. TU becomes SU and vice-versa), and replace the tension regulating band.

So if you get any other odd problems, just let me know and I'll check these documents for you and let you know what to do...

The SL-HF2000 is a fine machine. It is SuperBeta Hi-Fi, and, as any VCR of any format, in 1998, it is cable-ready with stereocast. People keep complaining that it lacks many features from earlier high-end machines but, hey ! it's still a Sony Betamax !

PCM sound recording on Betamax is made possible by using an Audio sound processor such as the Sony PCM501/601/701 or F1. These incredible units which date back to the early eighties take a stereo audio signal and encode it ( using full 16-bit CD standard PCM techniques ) into a video signal which is then recorded onto tape. The superior nature of the Beta format means that it is better for this purpose although there is no reason why other formats can't be used. One features some Beta VCR's have is a PCM mode switch which knocks out the drop-out compensator on playback. This allows the error correction in the PCM ataptor to work at full efficiency. See http://www.elektratec.co.uk/features.html for details. A picture of the PCM F1 is to be found at http://www.elektratec.co.uk/slf1acc.html

Sony SL-HF600 for sale $400. Works like a Charm. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. Absolutely perfect. I have no manual or remote, and the front flip-down is broken off. (I still have the piece though) The heads are a little dirty. It is a superBeta Hi-Fi with a cable ready tuner and PCM and BII/III speed. It is a mid level machine. I must emphasize though that it works, completely. Anybody interested, e-mail me. I can ship it anywhere in the US for free, but if you are in the rest of the world I might need some compensation. I am selling it because I can't get tapes. I love it very much but one tape frankly doesnt cut it! All reasonable offers considered!!! (if US $400 is way too much tell me)

Some additional comments on using PCM adapters for recording audio on video tape. I have made many hundreds of such recordings on Beta and VHS. Modern video tapes have so few dropouts that whether or not the dropout compensator can be disabled is not important. The biggest problem has been compatibility between machines. Even different units of the same model behave differently. And VCRs that perform perfectly for video are unusable for PCM. By trial and error selection of machines I have been successfully recording and archiving audio on inexpensive video cassettes for almost 20 years. With the PCM 601 I am able to use modern A to D convertors to update this format.

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows if modern Universal Remotes can be used on Sony Beta machines from the mid 80's era. More specifically on a SL-HF-150?

I have tried a few remotes, but all they do is turn the VCR on and off, can't get it to play, record, change channels etc.

Any advice from anyone out there would be appreciated.

John, for your application most any newer uni remote should work. I do know that mid 90s Zenith/Allegros won't. They don't have a code number for Betas. In otherwords they list, under Sony, per se, Sony and Sony Hi8. Neither code will work my Betas as well as won't work for Toshibas, and Sanyos either. I've tried. At the moment I use either a Sony 3 for 1 or a One For All (tm) 6. I've even got a generic TV Guide 3 for 1 that works the afformentioned Betas. Pepse.

Nice to see an australian tracking down a sony hf150... rather rare here only ever seen 2 and they werent for sale... a few hf100's about tho

as for the remote, I cant remember, but I think it was Tandy had one for 70 dollars that learnt commands, rather than being preprogrammed, thus if you can borrow a remote you can get the new one to learn the commands

but why cant you get an orriginal, speedy spares in kensington in melbourne, I have gotten a slhf 950 remote, and 2 sanyo remotes for vtc-m40's. So there must be someone near you who can get one. By the way, the sony shop in melb said they couldnt get the remotes, about 2 days before I ordered them thru speedy spares.

Thanks john.

Hello folks!

For about 10 years, my two SL-8000 have been out of order. About 4 years ago, my uncle found a SL-8000 in a refuse (garbage) container. This machine he recently gave to me as it didn´t work. When I opened this (third) machine, it looked like brand new inside except from the drive belts. I replaced them, and cleaned the drum etc. Now it´s working nearly perfect and surprisingly all my old tapes seems to be in about the same condition as they were 10 years ago. Fantastic as I for many years thought I lost all my rare rock-music specials.

Re: Tuning in cable stations on a EDV-7500

For some odd reason (I suspect it's because of the "prosumer" marketing) the EDV-7500 doesn't have a fully cable-ready tuner. According to the manual, cable stations 15-22, 23-36, 66-94 and 100-125 can be tuned in. Note the gap between channels 36-66. If you want to tune in these channels without a cable box you'll have to get a Cable Converter (Radio Shack used to sell them) that will allow you to tune in cable stations on the UHF band of your tuner. Quality varies but it's never as clear and clean as with a proper cable-ready tuner. Also, if there is a UHF station broadcasting over the air on the same channel you'll get interference. Hope this helps.

Ed - PAL stands for Phase Alternate Line, its the colour system, its used here as I, and restof europe as B (I think)

Larry - Try Jessops, they always seem to have a few tapes in stock.

PS anyone know anything about Vertical Helical Scan videos - I need some help to repair one or other (I have two faulty ones) and I am not paying for either as they are not Beta and only used for Pre recorded, (Whereas my VTC-M40 is worth repairing)

Ones Panacronic and the other is the worst Sony I have ever seen (both were given to me)

Ed, About the Sl-2710...

It sold for $1800 CDN at the time here in Montreal. So I figure the price was something like $1200-$1300 US.

It is known to be a very reliable VCR. Most of today's 2710 you'll find on the market have never been repaired. But they don't have much value in the used market today.

I'd rather trade mine for a 2700 :-)

Any offers (just a couple of quid would make me happy) ? Buyer collects from Impington, North Cambridge,UK

Also, my SL-C30 works fine except when warmed up, in which case it seems to just pause the tape transport every 3 secs. Is there any quick fix for this? (Tape tension?)

Not meaning to be nasty, but I get the feeling alot of NTSC users dont realise how hard it is to find good PAL units in some parts of the world, and to my understanding the last PAL units were the 950's from 85-87ish and would be great even if sony put out a simple hifi machine simply because most decent PAL's are wearing with age

New Beta deck from Sony

We want SuperBeta HiFi with NICAM PAL-I tuner 950 mechanism and heads will do - save Sony some tooling Jog Shuttle Remote Timer SmartLink 2 x SCART

Optional DVB Tuner ED-Pal Super fast unlaced (like Sanyo) winding

_Super Beta HiFi is essential or its a waste of time_

Without options I would pay about £800 - and this is entirely acheivable for Sony without much outlay on new tooling, DVB - £1000, my 950 won't last forever and I am still waiting for a viable replacement for Beta format - recordable DVD _MAY_ do it.

Regarding John's message above, I too live in South Australia and have seen the $20 machine in the South Road Cash Converters. It is in immaculate condition and well worth the money, however I declined to purchase it myself because I can't possibly fit one more beta VCR into my house. Consequently if there are any other beta fans in SA I suggest that they rush out and buy it before it is thrown in the trash. If anyone in South Australia want's any advice on where to get particular machines or tapes(even pro-x and pre-recorded)then feel free to ask because I know of quite a few places where such stuff can still be aquired in Adelaide. Hello,

I have a few questions that I hope someone will be able to answer. First, I have two Sony Trinitron cameras in near mint condition that i want to sell. Does anyone have a rough estimate what i should be asking for them and is there anyone out there interested in buying them? Two, I'm in New York and I'd either like to find a shop that does repairs (my deck is playing my tapes too fast) or a place that does Beta to VHS transfers. (i know that sounds traitorous, but i have a lot of old family films on my beta tapes and as of this moment, i can't watch any of them. hope you understand). Please write me at the address above.

Thanks Sam

To Alicia Riffle...

B1, B2 and B3 refers to recording speed. you could compare them as SP, LP, EP on VHS decks. Early beta decks and some high end models can record B1, but most beta vcrs make use of B2 and B3.

As with the other format, using a slower rec speed (B3) fits more stuff on a cassette, but the quality suffers...

Hope it helped ! Charles

I have kept an eye out for some time for a decent Beta player. This week I found two. Sony SL5200, and Zenith VR9760W. Both were in consignment shops and sold "as is". Everything lights up, and the tape is running, but nothing shows on tv.There are so many settings compared to a new VHS, that I am confused. Is there more to it than running the coax cable out of the vhf out port, and into the television, hit play, with tv on ch.3 or 4? Maybe neither one works, or maybe I need a manual. Nick...

The 9500 is the high-end one of the two consumer ED beta Sony released in the States. Capable of 500-line definition (SVHS has 400), ED format requires special metal formulated tapes, and tapes recorded in ED format may not be played back on a standard SuperBeta VCR. But, what the heck ? Who are you gonna trade tapes with ? ;-)

You may still buy a service manual from your local Sony dept. It contains all user instructions.

To answer Susan's question about PAL to NTSC converstion. The simplest way, which would give least loss of picture quality, is to play off PAL Beta, pass through a standards conveter which would make the transition to NTSC, then record on to NTSC Beta.

So you need a PAL Beta player, an NTSC Beta recorder and a standards converter which might be a seperate unit of even a VCR with the suitable electronics.

Also I have a Sony C6 for sale, needs a service - usual instabilty problem, or swap for good heads for a Philips N1502. Or I'll swap the C6 for any BetaHiFi decks.

Selling as its 1) not HiFi, 2) no remote, 3) its big, 4) its not needed and would never get used, I have 2 Sanyos with very low hours on their new heads and my 950 has 3 years left before next overhaul.

Hello, I need some information, I picked up a Sony SL-HRF70 Superbeta unit in good working order. On the rear panel, there is what looks like a 12 or 14 pin connection for a ribbon cable labled HI-FI stereo. Does anyone know if this VCR is stereo and is there is a cable available for that jack to make it play back in stereo. THats all for now. Thank You. Chris

The 28-pin plug at the rear of your SLHFR70 fits a Hi-Fi processor. This unit is quite a bit more than a simple cable..

To those of you who saw John announcement about a Sl-HF1000 for sale, I would just like to say that you should jump on such a rare occasion of buying the best consumer Betamax ever made, if not the best VCR. Better than a HF750 (HF950 NTSC equivalent) or even a HF900.

People who know what they are wouldn't part with them for nothing in the world. Well, at least, until they don't have any interest in beta.

Gday fellow Beta lovers. I am still wanting to buy a Beta machine in Sydney Australia in good working order if anyone has one for sale. In the meantime, can anyone help me with a repair problem with my current Beta machine, a Sanyo VTC-NX10 Betacord. It was working fine although I had to bodgy up a few new mini "fan-belts" that had perished. It began working fine then. However now it is loading fine, rewinding and FF fine (intermittently), but with Play the mechanism picks up the tape, takes it round, begins to play but the tape starts then to gather inside before shutting down after a few seconds...in other words, the left side of the tape is turning, but the right side isn't gathering. Any suggestions?

I have seen 950's at £500 s/h, and I have been told that is the normal price for a reasonable condition one.

A fully overhauled 950 is supposed to be worth more - up to £1000 mine is somewhere in between as its 1/2 way through head set 2, but is fitted with an aftermarket NICAM decoder.

So if the 950 is new heads etc 1750 Aus dollars sounds reasonable.

300 Aus Dollars would be an absolute bargain <= £150, if it works

ok I have been asked thru emails MANY TIMES about geting hold of new heads for sony hf150's and sony hf950's by people in AUSTRALIA. Well I spent 2 hours down at sony today, funny what a small world it can be...met old friends, anyways, hf150 heads are 260 something bucks, 7 in stock, hf950 heads are 280 something buck, 3 in stock, all located in sydney, but will be forwarded to any sony service centre within 3 days (in australia) at no extra charge, I hope this stops a few emails! its not just you Jeremy and Chris LOL. I am no expert on sony video heads either!

also! on my trip down to sony, I purchased a new item, well its the first time sony australia say they have imported it. A universal remote control! it goes for around 60 bucks australian, and is model number RM-V30T. these models I have personally seen it working on : all PAL sony's c9, f30, f60, hf100, hf150, sl200(multisystem), a much cheaper alternative to buying an orriginal! it also does a heap of other brand, and does tv's as well as a vcr at the same time, the oddest thing is its shaped like a water drop, and is weighted to stand up! I have taken a few pics of it and most of my beta stuff with my digital camera and will make a cruddy webpage to show what it looks like in the next few days.

hope this is of help,

John

WWW.XE.NET/CURRENCY/FULL/ So, in the case of the Aussie Beta, one Austrailian dollar is eqaul to $.63 cents in America. And in the case of the Beta, 1750 AUDollars is equal to $1,099.97 in USDollars; and or 1750 AUDollars is equal to 668.023 British Pound Sterling. TTYL. Pepse.

Just a note on remotes. I have a Sony VHS deck (yes I admit it) model SL 815. This deck is about 6 years old and has a full jog shuttle remote. This remote has a switch marked 1,2,3 when placed into position 1 the remote works my SL 950 perfectly, including the jog shuttle features and even the timer display. So you never know you may be able to find one of these easier. I also have the non jog shuttle remote with my 950.

I saw in the PAL-site help section that this problem occurs when the motor goes on the VTC-5000, 5150, 5300, 5350, and 5400. Is this the same problem Ihave with my 6400? I have a Sony BETAMAX model SLHF400 that I bought new in 1987. It has been used very little and looks and plays perfect. Make me an offer.

Fans of PAL Betamax machines may not know that the famous SL-HF950 SuperBeta machine continued in some markets as the updated SL-HF99ES. This was a further update of the SL-HF950 MKII. A few were sold in Australia at selected Sony Dealers for $2500. The last one I saw was in early 1996. Also at the same time an SL-HF77ES was available. This was a SuperBeta update of the SL-HF150 which incidently was meant to be a SuperBeta model from the Start! If anyone knows if the SL-HF99ES is still available on some markets, please let me know. I own an old SL-HF950ES which needs new heads when I can afford them. They actually work quite well in SuperBeta Pro mode using the latest Sony Beta Tape. I have never tried Pro-X but have tried the the latest Pro Sony Beta tape which is very good. The best Beta tape I ever tried is standard oxide Betacam tape. Do not try Metal Betacam SP or Digital Betacam tape as this performs quite poorly on Betamax machines.

I hope this info is of some use!

OWNERS OF SL-2700 / SL-2700B...

I have a parts deck for sale. It is in top-notch A-1 cosmetic condition (virtually no scratches). It sustained a major power fault: power block, AS7W and VI-1 boards are a mess. It would be a waste of time tring to fix this. Otherwise, everything is just fine. I can't tell if there is any problem with the mechanical chassis, since I can't operate it, but the "known to break often" loading gear is fine.

Anyone interested in refreshing the looks of its unit and / or wish to get "no longer availabe" replacement parts may drop me a note. I will accept any fair offer but I don't pat shipping.

Running Beta has got me a problem, my Panacronic video clock only goes up to 2001, and unless it blows up it won't get worn out.

I have just found out, NTCS SL2000 is an SLF1 and the SL-HF950 IS an NTCS 750.

Is it possible to get new head chips fitted to a Sanyo M40 head disc?

Why are my two Beta HiFi heavily used decks more reliably than the lightly used Panacronic, (last used 2 weeks ago)?

As VHS haters is it worth supporting DVD in the UK? has anyone here had any experience?

My 950 even makes SVHS look bad.

panacronic...hmm I can say that about some panasonic gear I have, mainly camcorders, but my panasonic deck has been a work horse and my older national gear is the best yet, both VHS and U-matic. I think you will find almost all beta decks have an NTSC equivalent, the sanyo m40 does, as well as the m20 and m30's. Often you bump into equivalent decks on the EBAY auction ite for the ads with pictures. I am not a VHS hater, I dont think its right to say that, it is an inferior format yes, it does have its uses as a mass media format, and for its price its ok, which cant be denied. as for replacing "head chips".......lets just say...I dont think so....as for your 950 making svhs look bad...hmm I question that...must be a domestic svhs deck...it shouldnt make it look *bad*, and from the results from my DV decks right now on the spot and not waiting for DVD to become commecially viable home recording format, I am not going to bother with DVD for along time, yes I am in australia, but we have the same television system.....

hope this is of some help,

John

(continue) Pioneer cld1200 PAL laserdisc, SLF1 system (deck, tuner and PCM)and Sony 715 DVD. I must tell you the DVD quality is very good if you enjoy watching movies. It provides you with plenty of film options IE directors naration, music and scene selection. Although I do like Laserdisc as the films package is always superior.( a bit like 12" records and CD, there is something about reading a record sleeve) I use my SL100 for main use and 950 for special recordings. The VHS deck has been reliable but lets face it no fun. My friends accuse me that if BETA won the format wars I would be huntinf about for "old VHS decks" I wonder, I do hope not!

Hi everybody DVD recorder is waiting just around the corner. Imagined a machine without nearly no mechanical wear No problems with lowerdrums & worn-out heads, it's just runs and runs like a CD-player, it's must be a dream.

Hitachi To Release Consumer DVD-Video Recorder In 2000

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Hitachi Ltd. (6501) plans to begin marketing a DVD-Video recorder in Japan and the U.S. by the end of 2000.

DVD-Video recorders employ DVD-RW (rewritable) technology, already used in personal computers, to allow both recording and playback of television broadcasts and movies. Hitachi is the first Japanese maker to follow the lead of Philips Electronics NV, which has already announced that it will release a DVD-Video recorder in 2000.

The DVD-Video recorder currently under development at Hitachi will support both 2.6-gigabyte and 4.7GB disks. Using digital recording technology, it will offer up to eight hours of video recording on a single 4.7GB disk -- four hours on each side -- with quality that surpasses that of existing videotapes.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (6752), Sony Corp. (6758) and other Japanese consumer-electronics makers are expected to follow suit in entering the new product area. Hitachi is also developing a DVD-Video camera for recording video on 8cm disks with 3.0GB of capacity.
