Hi there!
Any sony vo-5850P experts about? just a few questions about this machine, I just picked a few up to replace a few old series 2 clunkers.
When in search mode using the shuttle knob, they dont seem to lock? meaning the capstain, even when the shuttle is set to 1x speed, is this normal or does it need adjusting?
Are the heads and for that matter most of the drum the same in the 5600 or 5630's? As I have a few almost new 5600/ 30 's and one of my 5850's is long in the tooth.
Also anyone with a Rm-440 manual I could cheaply get a copy of? im located in South Australia, will pay postage.
Thanks for your time,
John
Hello all. I recently acquired a VO5800h U-matic VTR, and I have severalquestions. First, I thought the 5800 series was low-band only, this oneis marked with an -h designation. Second, does anyone have specifications this unit? My problem seems to be that it will not play back my previouslyrecorded tapes in color. It will, however, record flashes of color.Does anyone have a manual/schematic available? I could swap for a Vo9600 manul,(vol.1 only, Mechanical/electronic alignment, NTSC).Many thanks for these pages, the only place I have been able to find any information
all. I recently acquired a VO5800h U-matic VTR
Its a medical-use recorder, it plays and records in monochrome ONLY
if you wanted COLOR you bought the wrong deck...a lot of Users on eBay have been tricked into buying these decks thinking they were getting a great deal on a 5800, they got the biz instead.
^_____^
Isn't it a small modification? Or do you miss a complete colour module? If the VCR is modified there shouldn't be any colour flashes. Dave, what is happening with the A/C head?
I had the same thought about it being for medical use, having seen it on used medical equipment sites, but it clearly has some color circuitry, (labeled chroma, burst tune, etc.) The mystery continues.
someone was looking for the hour meter on a 5800/5850.
its located deep in the bowels of the beast, to the left of the reels looking down from the front, you might need a torch to see it, and you have to take the cover of the top.
I hope this is of some help

Hi! I am a complete novice to sony's U-Matic, and I wonder if I allways read video.. has there been an audio-only machine based on the umatic standard, too? Because Sony DADC (DigitalA udio Disc Corp.) accepts masters on "cd-r, DAT, Open Reel and U-Matic...) - I don't understand?
Best regards, hope to hear from u!
Boogie
Rein,
Havent gotten the acetone yet...TTTT I have been busy playing with a new (used) CG and editor and that I recently aquired, besides selling some stuff and working - but I will get around to it soon!
...has there been an audio-only machine based on the umatic standard, too?...
Hey Boogie,
No, you will get a much better audio recording with a Hi-Fi ½" VHS VCR because it will record (mulitplex) audio to the video track and give much better freq. response and signal-to-noise ratio than you can ever hope to achieve with the linear audio tracks of a U-Matic. Many folks use VHS tape to archive their LPs! Umatics have no Hi-Fi audio. Hope this helps!

Its a lovely thing when you find it and the indicator hasnt gone much past "0"

There was a digital audio editing system available from SONY in the early 80's .... it used two umatics and a special edit controller which buffered and processed the audio. I did see it in action once (I think it was at SONY's West London HQ at Sunbury ?).The umatics were (I think) NTSC series 2 machines (VO 2600 ?). They may have had some modifications (i.e. DOC disabled), but I'm sure that they essentially recorded PCM audio which was formated to appear to be a video signal.
Please, I need the upper drum for an sony VO 5800 U-matic. Can some person haelp me to get this part? Or tell me if you know some place where can I get it? Thanks you. I live in USA.
Sony used two types of digital Audio. First was the D.T.A. or Digital Tape Audio. However this format is no longer supported, Wim Nagtegaal still sells a DTA tape analyser. (Wich could be quitte handy when trying to restore old masters!). His homepage is located at http://www.wpnsystems.com. The other more sophisticated system is the DMR one. Or Digital Master Recorder wich works with highband/sp recorded PCM audio on a dedicated machine. These machines are purpouse build BVU 8 and up series with a PCM encoder inside called DMR 4000( BVU 870 like tape mech) and DMR 2000 ( BVU 850 type tape mech). Where the 4000 has a read after write error correction codec and the 2000 does not. I know its possible to record MPEG 2 video and audio streams on to a DMR 4000 when used in combination with an ISDN video codec and some handy work!. Many studios used the DTA and DMR systems back in the eightes. But since the advent of Pro Tools and Image recording on removable scsi discs the DMR/DTA systems have become obsolete. If you plan on going PCM print, consider buying a PCM F1 and a betamax. If the heads on the betamax still give an o.k. picture you'll have an audio recorder wich has less faults then most DAT and Hi8 PCM systems!!!. Also the bass tilt on the F1 sounds more crisp then the low cut on most DAT machines.
Boggie,
I dint know squat about this Euro stuff that Walt is speaking of, Im from Texas, so I guess it been done - who knew!!

Hi to you umatic wizzards:
Just two questions:
1.) Is it possible to get the smpte timecode signal recorded on a umatic tapewith a BVU 950 out on a VO 9600? My 9600 does not have a timecodeoutput, but maybe thats optional?
2.) I want to buy a power supply for a JVC PR 4800E portable umatic.Anyone wants to trade at an affordable price ;-) ?regardsKai Hoffmann
"timecode signal recorded on a umatic tape with a BVU 950 out on a VO 9600? "Kai, you could rcord the timecode on one of the audio tracks, that's assuming that you only need mono audio from one track.Power supply - contact; mailto john@channel7television.fsnet.co.uk,I let him have a whole bunch of psu's about a year ago.http://www.u-matic.com
Second hand cannon XL1 is wanted. If anyone has any information or offers, I would be greatful.

Does anyone know where, prefferably on the net, I can get a description of the menus on a VO-9850? Thanks
Looking for an easy way to take a Hi8(sony) video and put it on UMATIC. Cox Cable in San Diego, CAStill uses this format for broadcast. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thanks In AdvanceC Butler
HI, THIS IS ABOUT A VO-5600 UMATIC NOT ACCEPTING A TAPE. I WAS TOLD IT NEEDS A SMALL BELT INSIDE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THAT IS CORRECT? IF IT IS A BELT WHERE COULD I FIND ONE?THANKS,BOB.
FORGOT TO PUT THIS IN MY FIRST REQUEST ABOUT THE UMATIC V0-5600, I ALSO NEED AN OWNERS MANUAL. PHOTO COPY WILL BE FINE.THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR HELPING,BOB.
I have a 5850 I recently aquired. It seems to have a problem I need help with. The picture cannot seem to lock, and the servo light comes on, sometimes for a few seconds other times flickers. It also sounds as if there is gravel (kidding, very noisy) in it in ff or rew.Lastly, the jog wheel functions in reverse, but not forward.Any suggestions? I might post more dilemas if I come across them.Gregory
looking to move on 2x VO-2630 U-Matic machines. Any offers?
Anyone outthere who has an service manual for vo5850 /5800 ?
About Ampex ADO: Hi. I recently did see an old demo tape of an AMPEX ADO effects box.So i ll buy one somewhere this year to add it to my Umatic stuff(ok....strange hobby ...;-). My question is: As there are some models of ADO (100, 1000, 3000 ) which would be the"best buy at best price" for a two channel composite ADO which does really"strange" things (2D and 3D)to video? Thanks a lot!Kai
Could anyone help me locate the service manuals to a Sony VO-2610 or to a JVC CR-6050? I have been looking into modifying these decks to work with S-video. Poking around with the oscilloscope, I've found convenient places to get S-video output during playback, but the video input circuitry is complicated enough that it has thoroughly stumped me! Thanks in advance.
Hi Kay,
I can't tell you much about an ADO but I did repair once an ADO 100 and had a look at an ADO 1000. If I remember well the ADO 1000 also had component inputs and outputs. The ADO 100 that I repaired had a faulty chip. I think it was a complex ALU type chip. A new one was close to 1000 DM! It was bought in Germany by the way. After I repaired the ADO I played around with it a little bit. I was impressed with the picture quality and the effects. You have to realise that it uses a lot of energy. I am not sure but I think it was close to 1000 watts! I don't know the difference between the 100 and the 1000. (Except of the component part if I remember correctly.) The possibilities of the 100 are impressive. I hope this helps you a little bit.
Rein
Ooops! I mistyped that JVC model number. It should be CR-6650U, not CR-6050.
Hi, does anyone have a timecode card for a BVU-800p series kicking around that they no longer require?
Hi everyone... Does anyone here know how to (if it's possible) sync a VO-5800 with an ADAT tape machine so they play back in sync? i thought therewas some kind of optional connector for the 5800...? any insight iswell appreciated.
Just wondering if anyone knows where I could find U-matic tapes in Sydney, Australia - preferably new, but used would be OK as well.
Thanks, Andrew
A thought for those umatic tech people..........
I have a 5850P with long gone video heads, now I have a wrecked 5630 with worn but workable heads, I picked them both up at auction in Australia. I simply swapped the drums, and removed the pickup assembly off the top of the 5850P drum (assume this is flying erase head pickup?) and blow me down it seems to give a pretty good picture (few drop outs I knew the heads werent great).
The heads are all the same in those series 5 decks? SHould it work so easily?
Thanks
John
Does anyone know if Sony has now officially abandoned the Umatic format as there is no mention of Umatic on their website anymore?Rich..
Looking for a new or in-good-condition 3/4" umatic player. Thanks, Laurn Wilhelm.
Hi Alfredo,
I have the diagrams of a CR-6650. I also had the idea to make something for Y/C input/output. I think to go from VHS to U-matic low-band shouldn't be too difficult because the frequency used for the colour in VHS and U-Matic low-band are almost the same. 686 KHZ for low-band and 627 KHZ (or is it 624 KHZ?) for VHS. I know from my own experience that when you put a VHS dub signal int a U-matic low-band dub input of a JVC TBC it accepts the VHS colour frequency MOST OF THE TIME! But I am more interested in going from HI-8 to U-matic SP. So this is from 7?? KHZ HI-8 colour frequency to 924 KHZ U-matic SP colour frequency. This is further apart. I wonder if I am able to use old HI-8 deck electronics (camcorder?) and make it work on 924 KHZ. For editing I am using a Panasonic SW -800 switcher. It is able to switch Y/C 4.43 MHZ. I am using BVU-950 VCRs. The BVU-950 doesn't have Y/C 4.43 MHZ. I can try to transport the Y/C 924 KHZ to Y/C 4.43 MHZ but than I need to add two (expensive) TBCs because the TBCs in the BVU-950 unfortunately uses only one memory for both Y and C. So there isn't anything to gain here. But I am still looking for a way to improve a few things because I know I am loosing much in the editing and dubbing processes. I also have a JVC CP-5550 and a CR-8250. They are able to dub FM to FM. This is the shortest possible way. This works amazing. Dub quality is really high. But that is only for dubbing not for editing. I am interessted in your ideas about this subject.
Can anyone tell me the average hours/life expectancy of VO9800 and BVU950 video heads?
I replaced heads in a 9800 and 9850 with 2500 hours on the hour indication. No drop-outs or comettailing yet but the picture with the new heads improved a lot.

Hey you'se... Do excuse the slight off topic - see, I really dig my old umatics, and would apprecaite a source of manauls /schems for 5630 etc Lowband series... But my pressing (off topic) problem is to find the little 10 pin Exterbnal VCR connector on a Panasonic F10 'system' cam (its 10 pin, wonder if its the same as a K (old 10 pin cam) conector, so's I can do an adaptor easily Pinout or souce of conn/lead most welcome. Hi !
I have a very old 1810 Umatic (PAL Lowband) machine which is working, at least sometimes. Anyone interested ? I am also selling a service manual for the VO-9800. If you have any other wishes concerning Umatic stuff, just email me, maybe I can get it for you.
forgot this: If anyone is looking for a viewfinder for the DXC-325 (PAL) camera, I am selling it, too
Hey I have like over 160 U-matic master tapes with old old videos.Anyone interested in them?
Re: Rein Oosterling's post on Thursday 5th April 9:11 pm U.K. Time
I can't comment on the VHS-to-Umatic dubbing idea because I've never tried it. Also, I'm not familiar with the chroma frequency for Hi-8 video...but you can visit http://www.lionlmb.org/quad/format.html for a pretty comprehensive reference on videotape formats. I'd like to get a copy of the CR-6650U diagrams. I can send you payment ahead of time for the cost of copying and mailing the manuals. I would really appreciate these diagrams, as I've had a hard time finding any documentation on these machines. I am in NTSC-land, so I don't know whether there would be really big diferences in the design of the Y/C separation circuitry between NTSC and PAL decks. Anyway, my reasons for doing the conversion were (1) to get high quality recordings from a digital switcher and a camera that have S-video outputs and (2) to do high quality dubs between the U-matic deck and an S-VHS deck, which also has S-video inputs and outputs. When recording through the composite input, the video quality is pretty good, but when I'm using a U-matic source (which itself was recorded through a composite input), going through the board to add titles and effects, and then into another U-matic deck through its composite input, the quality of the final copy leaves something to be desired. When possible, I do use the FM dub feature on these decks, and the quality is phenomenal! Also, in a stroke of luck, I found some schematics that seem to be a close match to the VO-2610's circuitry. From the looks of these schematics, adding S-video inputs and outputs should be pretty easy (it seems that Sony left space on the board and component lead holes for a buffer stage to be used to drive the Y and C pins on a dub socket).

Anyoune outthere who can tell me where i could get a replacement vid drum/heads for my sony 5850 and 5800 ?
Does anybody know a site about or information on the Sony CCD-V200. Yep i know it's a video 8 peace of cr*p, but i'm having one over for a fix up. And i wanted to know if a new TRV-50 series Hi 8 head would fit, or that i should try to get a new standard head from sony (wich costs a lot...)
Hi caN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT CAUSES THE HORIZONTAL LINES WITCH SOMETIMESAPPEAR IN MY RECORDINGS THE OVERALL PICTURE DOESN'T LOOK THAT BAD
drop-outs?
these are verry narrow random smal lines not the whole picture (left right of the screen)I thought dropouts are bigger snowy kind of missing big linesanyone any comments ?
"these are verry narrow random smal lines not the whole picture (left right of the screen) I thought dropouts are bigger snowy kind of missing big lines anyone any comments ? "Roger, are we talking about 5 series machines with timecode conversion? I seem to remember having a similar problem with 5 series machines which had highband conversions to operate in conjunction with CEL Maurice system where timecode reading was essential and the timecode mod utilised the first few horizontal lines of the picture. When this went askew the picture gave these horizontal flashes because the preset had shifted the timecode down the picture. The conversion was Pixikit and after replacing the brush assemblies etc. then eventually the upper drum, it was found to be the timecode mod. and a simple adjustment of a pot on the tc board cured the problem. http://www.u-matic.com
hi therea simple adjustment of a pot on the tc board cured the problem. ?can anyone tell me where i can find this tc board ? I haven't got a service manual and didn't get around to poke a lot in these machinesthank you
also I forgot to ask how can I find out if my (indeed)type 5 seeries has been modded ?
I think that that pot is on a PCB called Y-something, and is designated R10 or R12. Since you're in holland, ring Sony Broadcast and Professional tech support in badhoevedorp. Most of the times Tim is around you can ask him for a photocopied service manual. (since it is no longer a item on sale, a photocopy can be ordered very easily). I doubt it will cost more then Hfl 50,- or so. Also the NOB in Hilversum have a few guys who used to live in side 5-series U-wrappers... their behind the big Endemol studios next to "videocentrum" on the Sumatralaan....
I am trying to setup a routine cleaning schedule for all the decks in my post house. I cannot seem to find any 3/4 cleaning tapes on the net. Is there another way to clean it? do you know of anywhere where i could purchase some cleaning tapes?
"I am trying to setup a routine cleaning schedule for all the decks in my post house. I cannot seem to find any 3/4 cleaning tapes on the net. Is there another way to clean it? " I think that others will agree with me that the only way to clean pro heads is with isopropryl alcohol on chamois leather, very carefully! Sony do a cleaning kit which comprises plastic handles with chamois bonded on the ends, but I haven't got any left.http://www.u-matic.com

I also dicouvert just monitoring a black line shivering at te top of the picturewhen i put a solid colour picture trough my 5850 composite in/out video just monitoring (not recording)could this be related with the higband modification ?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roger - have you established that the 5 series machines that you have are conversions? If you have 5850 recorder and 5800 source - or what?If they have hi-band mod you should have indicator lamps on front panel to tell which mode the machines are in - hi or low or SP maybe? Then try recording something in assemble mode and afterwards in insert mode and check the difference. You should lose the problem in assemble mode.(if the problem is the conversion). E-mail me with the exact set up. Roland.
In regards to random black lines on a 5850, I posted a while back about putting a 5630 head drum into a 5850P simply as the 5850P was long in the tooth and I had a 5630 with other problems. Sounds like the same symptoms of head wear that I had on the orriginal heads, black lines, drop outs. Not white or on highlights like on some other decks but black drop outs.
never knew you could get a highband mod for a series 5 deck? Also have been told by sony here the 5800/5850 series have extreemly bad head wear problems and head life is estimated at only 1000 hours. That seems rather short? or is it just me?
John
hello..... I recently picked up a sony vo 2610 and a sony vp 2010 .They seem to to be in working order however I did not get any tapes with them so I don't know for sure. I am an audio guy ,so I am just being introduced to the world of u-matic. I am wondering what applications these decks might have in an audio recording facility and might these decks be a pair , and if so ,do they need to be connected to some sort of remote?

putting a headdrum from a 5630 to a 5850 whould leave no space for th flying erase heads would it?waht's the use of having a 5850 withoutthe erase head I won't be able to insert?
el dave-o-loco - Yep. they're a pair alright, The controller is the RM300 I think. A primitive device which consists of only push buttons(even shuttle - there is no jog) but you can control the record machine from itself. U-matic is a very good audio recording set up.Well, at least you have two channels which can be used independently in insert mode. You have to "black" a tape in assemble mode first. Got no tapes? There is a guy on this website - http://www.u-matic.com - giving some away free.
I have a brand new sony vo7630. Never had a tape in the machine Anybody want to make me an offer
Help!
For the NTSC users out there I have a question. On my VO-5600 it seems to get audio levels alright, yet when I play it back via the RF i have very low and scratchy audio. When I plugged head phones in the audio monitor, it still sounded the same. Anyone know what is causing this or have encountered the same problem?
Can someone help me setup my Sony VP-2011?
Need help!!
i got a sony u-matic VO-2610, but today i did something stupid.i tried to clean it, and after that it doesnt work. i can´t get the image.any help, please post it or send it to my mail address.

Yes honey but I bet you can't get a decent PAL picture out of either of 'em
I own a 1998 Peugeot 306 :-), And i since i almost carry around a HL-V55 with a PBA my car does put out a great PAL signal.....
I've been trying to get a signal from an old jvc camera ( s-100 E )via a dub cable and bnc connection into a targa video board on a mac. Everythings working fine except the cable running from the camera; a 12pin male to 10 pin male dub lead which i find is impossible to purchase and unbelievably expensive to make up. ANYONE GOT ONE LYING AROUND THEY'D SELL TO ME?
what is the markede price fore an used sony vo-5630 in wery good condition?
Shouldn't be that expensive to make ...maybe 25 quid or so.
I happen to have an s100E (sorry I'm using it <g>) and made my cable up by changing the plug on an old 10 pin cam lead; equally well you could use SCART cable.... Canford Audio carry the plugs.
I have 73 ex-broadcast U-matic tapes ( 30 and 60 minutes) in proper library cases. If anyone is interested in buying these, please send me an email.Thanks.
hiI got a sony 6800 "portable" u-mat when I put in a tape most of the time it makes a clacking noise but nothing happens once in a while it does so the thing works ok for the restanyone got an idea ?
Roger -it sounds like power problems. Have you tried the machine from a psu rather than the batteries? Otherwise it could be the threading motor sluggish - the threading ring sticking - try a bit of vaseline (but not near the tape guides) or you can adjust the meshing of the threading motor - it may be a bit tight and is not travelling the entire distance. Also you could encounter this problem with some inferior tapes where the reels tend to stick.http://www.u-matic.com

Thanks
Anybody out there skilled in digital data transfer for Sony 10/80 to 1MG "email" transmission? We may be looking for someone to work this system for a film to be shot soon in New Zealand. I was wondering if anybody knows of an interface for Ampex 1 inch (vpr8) to umatic bvu protocol please FOR AMATEUR USE.
Paul - My understanding is that NTSC u-matic is all low band. Can anyone else confirm this?http://www.u-matic.com
Well also Highband and SP aswell as a special medical/industrial type of u-matic NTSC where made. The reason that their are no multisystem highband/sp players/recorders is due to the fact the headdrum diameter deviates from NTSC and PAL. The medical/industrial U-matic i mentioned is the one recorded by the NTSC VO5850H wich was superceeded by Hi8 decks in most US hospitals around 1992... I use a VP9000 for playback of all these formats
Hi, I lost my lense cap for my canon mv3i mc today, Canon's support on their website doesn't even have a camcorder section so I'm stuck, where should I look? I'm just worried cuz the camera's new and cost £1100!!! Last thing I need is a knackered lense.
Wrong place to ask really but why not try your local photography store for a lens cap the right diameter? Jessops should advse.

I bought a set of Altec Lansing speakers (a subwoofer and 2 satelite speakers) for my computer in the States, where the electricity is 110 V - 60 Hz. It wasn' until I got back to Belgium that I realised the speakers needed to be plugged into the electricity. Electricity in Belgium is 220 V - 50 HZ. I can convert the voltage from 110 V to 220 V. But can I do anything so that the frequency difference doesn't damage the speakers???I would appreciate any advise I can get.
